【Description】
The Symposium on”Civil Resistance, High-Tech Totalitarianism and China’s Future” and the “China Action Essay Award” Ceremony will be held on January 19-20, 2024 at the Memorial Hall of the Victims of Communism Foundation. The event is co-sponsored by the Victims of Communism Foundation, China Action, and the Institute for China’s Democratic Transition.
The symposium will explore the role of civil resistance in democratic transition, the challenges of high-tech totalitarianism to civil movement in China, and the resilience and weaknesses of the Beijing regime.Besides keynote speeches, the titles of four panels are:

The Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation (VOC) is an educational, research, and human rights nonprofit organization devoted to commemorating the more than 100 million victims of communism around the world and to pursuing the freedom of those still living under totalitarian regimes. The Foundation was authorized in 1993 by a unanimous Act of Congress signed as Public Law 103-199 by President William J. Clinton on December 17, 1993.

The Institute for China’s Democratic Transition is a non-profit think tank and educational organization. It is dedicated to studying democratic transitions and economic reforms that have taken place around the world in recent decades, drawing the lessons from these experiences for China’s present and future reference, and facilitating dialogues and communications, so as to minimize the uncertainties in the transition process, and increase the chances of its success. One of its programs is China Journal of Democracy, a flagship publication of the Chinese dissident community.
